Sad loss of a young man, one of far to many. He was my Grandmothers cousin.

        Hi,

Old thread I know. Keith is my Uncle. So Samuel Campbell was my Great Grandmothers cousin. I visited his grave July 2016 to pay my respects. I contacted a gentleman who specialises in WW1 history. He told me that on the 2nd January 1917, 2 men were caught in a German ambush in Plugstreet Wood. One was mortally wounded and one was injured and taken to a field hospital. According to him, Samuel was buried near the field hospital in question. So it is likely he died there. I recently visited the Inniskilling Fusiliers museum and enquired about Samuel. They were able to place him at the Somme 1st July 1916.
